cardio was never the plan
When I say "cardio was never the plan," it means my fitness journey has never focused primarily on endurance activities. Like many, I walked into the gym wanting to build strength and improve muscle tone rather than spending hours on the treadmill or elliptical. The funny thing is the way you try to appear intimidating among seasoned gym-goers—arms crossed, steady gaze, acting cool—only to have the illusion crumble right after your warm-up session when the real effort begins. In my experience, warming up is essential but often underestimated; it prepares your body for the heavier lifts and reduces injury risk. However, it’s also when you realize your true stamina and fitness level. I remember feeling a bit out of place but motivated as the warm-up transitioned into more intense sets. That contrast between the confident arrival and the reality of needing to catch your breath is something many can relate to. Avoiding cardio or limiting it isn’t uncommon, especially if your goals are muscle growth or strength training. It’s about balance and knowing what works for your body. Some days, I add short cardio bursts as active recovery, but overall, my sessions prioritize weightlifting and flexibility work. If you’re at the gym trying to look intimidating or just getting started, my advice is to embrace the journey. Every warm-up, every struggle, every laugh at your own serious face trying to be imposing — it’s part of building consistency and confidence. Cardio may not be the plan for everyone, but every bit of effort contributes to your overall health and progress.
