What’s the amount of toothpaste do you use?

I recently learned that a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is enough. You just need a little bit of toothpaste (yeah, about pea sized) with a soft bristled brush. The recommendation for kids is even less than that - just smear what's right at the cap onto the brush - because kids are more likely to accidentally swallow the toothpaste. However, if you're using a sensitivity toothpaste, many of those do recommend that you use a strip of paste the entire length of your brush head.

2024/7/10 Edited to

... Read moreMaintaining oral hygiene is essential for overall health, and using the correct amount of toothpaste plays a crucial role in effective brushing. Many dental professionals recommend a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, which is ideal for adults. This quantity ensures that you get the benefits of fluoride without using excessive product that could lead to ingestion in children. For kids, the amount should be even less. Typically, a smear right at the cap of the toothpaste tube is sufficient for young children to minimize the risk of swallowing too much toothpaste. This precaution is vital as children under six years old are more prone to swallowing toothpaste, which can lead to health issues if fluoride is consumed in excessive amounts. In cases where individuals use sensitivity toothpaste, it is often advised to apply a strip of toothpaste the entire length of the brush head. This larger amount helps in effectively managing tooth sensitivity and provides a more thorough cleaning experience. Additionally, it's important to look at the type of toothpaste you are using. Some are formulated for specific issues like whitening, sensitivity, or tartar control, and understanding your personal oral health needs can guide your choice of the correct product and amount used. Incorporating good brushing techniques—such as brushing at a 45-degree angle and taking your time—in conjunction with the right amount of toothpaste ensures optimal dental care. Remember, proper oral care routines combined with the correct usage of toothpaste significantly influence your overall dental health and hygiene.

Flossing before you brush. Flossing helps loosen up the food bits that the brush can then scrub away. And you're apparently not supposed to rinse the toothpaste out. 😅
