The first step is scary. But not alone.
Yesterday we went for a short hiking trip in Malaysia.
One moment really stayed with me.
My coach Janice was walking beside Doreen, gently holding her hand while hiking up and down the slope.
What many people didn’t know was…
Doreen is a 70-year-old grandma.
The night before the trip, she injured her toe.
It was swollen and painful.
And just before we started the hike, she realised she had left her mobile phone in the car, which meant she couldn’t take photos or videos during the hike.
You could see she felt upset for a moment.
But she didn’t let that stop her.
Step by step, she kept going.
The hike wasn’t as easy as it looked. Some parts were steep with gradual uphill climbs. With an injured and swollen toe, it was even tougher.
We walked the trail together, taking the climb step by step.
Janice chose to stay beside Doreen, holding her hand whenever the slope got harder.
Step by step, they kept going.
And in the end…
she completed the entire hike. Amazing, right?
What touched me even more was this…
Janice isn’t Doreen’s coach.
She simply chose to walk beside her and make sure she wasn’t left behind.
In our community, we always say,
“No one gets left behind. We reach the summit together.”
Yesterday, I saw those words come alive.
Watching that moment made me reflect on something.
Many journeys in life feel just like a hike.
Sometimes people hesitate to start something new because they think:
“What if I can’t do it?”
“What if it’s too difficult?”
“What if I’m not ready yet?”
But most journeys don’t begin when everything is perfect.
Sometimes you start with an injured toe.
Sometimes things don’t go according to plan.
Yet you take the step anyway.
And the beautiful part is this…
You don’t have to walk the journey alone.
I’m grateful to God for placing me in a community like this.
Sometimes the most important thing
is simply having the courage to take the first step.

Starting something new can feel intimidating, especially when obstacles come unexpectedly—like an injury or forgotten essentials. This story reminds me that perseverance combined with support creates powerful momentum. In my own experience, I’ve faced moments where fear held me back from beginning a new project or adventure. But witnessing encouragement and shared strength helped me embrace imperfection and keep moving forward. When someone walks beside you, offering steady encouragement like Janice did for Doreen, it alleviates the pressure and builds resilience. No matter the difficulties — whether physical hurdles or self-doubt — knowing you’re not alone makes the challenge manageable. The metaphor of a hike resonates deeply: life’s tough climbs are easier to handle when shared, and every step, even with setbacks, counts. Embracing the journey, trusting the process, and accepting help cultivate growth and success. So, if you’re hesitating because conditions aren’t ideal, remember that starting imperfectly is still progress, and communities exist to uplift each other. Reflecting on this, I encourage everyone to find their tribe, take that first step despite fears or injuries, and keep moving together. The climb may be steep, and the path unclear, but strength emerges from connection and courage.
