Are you into gutsy horror but get squeamish at gratuitous visual gore? Really?? Me too! I thought I was weird, and I am, but at least I’m not the only one.
I will probably never watch Cannibal Holocaust, but that’s okay because Cannibal Vengeance is here to open Pandora’s box on safe, comforting paper (or, in this case, pixels).
Ya know, for something that originated as a screenplay, Lee does a pretty good job of setting the scene like a book. That being said, this reads like exactly what it originated as: a screenplay for a generic snuff film, complete with a backstory on the filming process that’s borderline unbelievable. I won’t say more because it involves story spoilers, but absolutely read the Afterword when you’re done with the story.
If you’re looking for an entry into the splatterpunk genre with a unique storyline and fleshed-out dynamic characters, you will not find it here. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not fun! As someone who gets squeamish with on-screen gore, I’m not mad that I have a written version to sate my curiosity in the genre. I got exactly what I came for, nothing more, nothing less. I would honestly pick this back up as an ol’ reliable.
