Seriously, if you're looking for a side dish that's way more exciting than regular fries but just as easy (maybe even easier!), you HAVE to try these. My family absolutely devoured them last night, and I totally get why. They're crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and you can customize them in so many delicious ways. The best part? You don't even need to boil them first! That's right, no extra pots, no waiting for water to boil, just pure air fryer magic for ultimate crispiness. I usually grab a bag of small, uniform baby potatoes or new potatoes – they work perfectly for smashing. Give them a good wash, then toss them with a generous amount of COOKING OIL SPRAY (this helps with crispiness and seasoning adhesion), a good pinch of coarse SALT, freshly ground BLACK PEPPER, and a hint of GARLIC POWDER. Sometimes, I'll even melt a little BUTTER and drizzle it over for extra richness before tossing. Now for the 'SMASHING TIME' fun! Lay your seasoned potatoes on a cutting board or a clean surface. Using the bottom of a sturdy glass or a potato masher, gently press down on each potato until it flattens to about 1/2 inch thick. Don't go too hard, you want them smashed, not disintegrated! Arrange your smashed potatoes in a single layer in your air fryer basket. Don't overcrowd it, because that’s the secret to getting them super crispy! You might need to do this in batches. Air fry them at around 375-400°F (190-200°C) for about 18-25 minutes, flipping them halfway through. Keep an eye on them – you’re looking for that gorgeous golden-brown color and irresistible crunch. Want to take them to the next level? Let's talk 'loaded smashed potatoes'! After they're nice and crispy, you can sprinkle them with shredded cheddar cheese and some cooked, crumbled bacon bits, then pop them back in the air fryer for another minute or two until the cheese is melty and bubbly. A sprinkle of fresh chives or green onions (if I have them) at the end just completes the picture. Another favorite of mine is adding a generous dusting of grated PARMESAN CHEESE and some FRESH OR DRIED PARSLEY right after they come out – the residual heat melts the cheese slightly and the herbs add a pop of flavor.
