A ROOT CANAL?!?

Earlier this week I went to the dentist as one does and walked out scheduled for a root canal.

For starters, I know I am going to need one eventually, but something inside me told me it wasn’t the time. I was there for a regular check up and concern for my back molar. I ran down how I felt that a cavity is starting to form again and wanted a filling. They told me that my options were based on results.

The dentist, a very nice lady, came in and sat down with me just to tell me that they were in favor of a root canal. They performed a test where they knocked my tooth with the end of the mirror and due to slight pain, automatically sat down with the conclusion of a root canal (if you don’t know they range from $10 to $6,000 out of pocket depending on insurance).

I began crying because I truly felt that I failed myself. It sounds exaggerated, but it’s one of the obligations I set for myself. I called my friend (who is a dental assistant at another office) and he asked for any x-rays I had gotten. Low and behold my situation just escalated. He showed his office and they determined it’s a little much based on the x-ray solely. They told me to get a third opinion and I scheduled another visit at another company.

I was optimistic because the staff of this newer company were so polite and supportive of my situation they decided to take me in free of charge for that opinion. The dentist sat with me and explained what he saw in the x-rays and described every test he was doing and how it helped determined his thought process. At the end of a long conversation he concluded that I cancel the root canal on Monday and get a ceramic fill. He went into detail how he would do the procedure to save my tooth and made all the concerns go away.

It’s not that bad of a story, but one of my worse. Lesson to be learned, get other professional opinions. Go with what you feel comfortable with. It doesn’t hurt to ask questions even if they sound stupid to you.

P.s. If a root canal is needed in the future, i’m okay with it. Just something seemed off based in my perception. Also, the dentist believed in their own practices and morals and they are all subjected to their professional opinions. There is no hate to company I went to prior. Just find something that makes you comfortable. #lemon8diarychallenge #embracevulnerability #unfiltered #rootcanal #dentiststory

A root canal is often recommended when decay reaches the tooth's pulp, and symptoms like prolonged sensitivity or pain could indicate the need for this treatment. However, it's crucial to seek multiple opinions, as diagnoses can vary. Many patients feel overwhelmed when facing potential procedures, especially with cost implications ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars. Patient advocacy plays a key role; don't hesitate to ask questions or voice concerns during consultations. Empathetic dental professionals should thoroughly explain their recommendations, outline treatment options, and address any uncertainties. Comfort and trust in your dental provider can significantly impact your experience. It is also essential to maintain regular dental check-ups to catch issues early before they escalate into more severe treatments. This way, you can implement preventive measures like proper oral hygiene and dietary adjustments, which are paramount in maintaining dental health. Lastly, creating a supportive network, such as consulting with friends or family members in the dental field, can provide valuable perspectives during these challenging decisions. Remember, prioritizing your comfort and understanding your options is vital in any health-related scenario.
