I didn’t lose him. I lost myself. 🤍

You didn’t just lose the relationship. You lost the version of you that existed before it.

The hardest part of leaving a bad situation, a toxic dynamic, or a situationship isn’t the leaving. It’s catching your reflection one day and not recognizing the woman looking back.

You shrank. You tolerated. You called crumbs a meal and stayed hungry for years.

Starting over isn’t failure — it’s the first honest thing you’ve done in a long time. But you can’t rebuild with the same blueprint that broke you. No fluff, no “good vibes only.” Just the real, unglamorous work of putting your pieces back together, one page at a time.

Save this for the day you’re ready 🤍

... Read moreExperiencing the aftermath of a toxic relationship often leaves you questioning your identity and worth. I remember the moment I looked in the mirror and felt like a stranger staring back, much like the 'mirror check' described in this post. It’s a grieving process—not just for the partner lost but for the version of yourself that was diminished during that time. Tolerating crumbs or the bare minimum can quietly erode your self-esteem and boundaries, making it feel as if you've lost yourself entirely. This realization can be sobering but also a catalyst for change. The key to healing is accepting that starting over is a brave, necessary step, not a failure. What helped me was acknowledging the unglamorous, often painful process of reconstruction—no sugar-coating or toxic positivity, just honest work. I found journaling extremely effective; guided journal prompts encourage reflection and help articulate confusing emotions and identities lost during the toxic phase. There are many resources, like the 'I Don’t Know Who I Am Anymore' journal mentioned here, that can guide this process. Important too was learning to rebuild boundaries and self-respect, something I previously compromised to keep peace or maintain the situationship. Shadow work—exploring and integrating the parts of ourselves we often avoid—also played a crucial role in my recovery, helping me confront painful truths without judgment. If you’re on this journey, remember that healing is not linear. There will be setbacks, but each small step forward is progress. Surround yourself with supportive communities, whether online or offline, who understand that healing takes time and courage. The first step is showing up and deciding that your self-love and identity matter more than the comfort of a familiar but harmful pattern. Save this for when you’re ready, because the most important relationship you will ever have is the one with yourself.
