Tips for picking a college

As someone who has picked both an undergraduate school and grad school, I would say I have pretty good experience choosing schools.

Picking a school is tough, because this choice really has a lot of weight on your life in my opinion.

I would say the biggest thing to think about is cost, and the life style you want to have. For me, going somewhere that was full ride made more sense than a school that was “higher” on my list but was going to cost me $80,000 a year. But, this was because I wasn’t really sure exactly what I wanted to do, so I had no reason to choose that program.

There is more that goes into life style than just cost though. I wanted to stay dancing, wanted a school with a good culture, etc. so this is really personal. I recommend making list of what you want out of college, not just a typical pro con list, because college is so much more than the institution.

... Read moreChoosing the right college is a significant decision that can shape your career and personal life. It's crucial to consider not just the financial implications but also how well the school's culture aligns with your lifestyle and interests. As you're evaluating colleges, make sure to look deeply into financial aid options and scholarships that could make higher education more accessible without leaving you in debt. Moreover, think about your long-term goals and what you want to achieve during your time in college. Exploring extracurricular activities, like dance or theater, can greatly enrich your college experience. A vibrant campus life can enhance both education and personal growth, making it important to find a college that fosters an environment where you can thrive both academically and socially. Additionally, be open-minded about diverse programs offered by institutions. Sometimes, schools have excellent resources in fields you may not have considered initially. Check to see if the college encourages students to explore different subjects before narrowing their focus. This flexibility can provide invaluable insights into various career paths and passions. Lastly, engage with current students or alumni to gain a better understanding of each college's community. Their insights can help paint a picture of what life is really like on campus and help you determine if it meets your expectations and personal goals. Remember, selecting a college is more than just a decision about education—it's about choosing a place where you'll grow and find your niche.
