How do people deal with “the ick”?

I don't think I've ever experienced the ick, but here have been a few times where some cringe flashes through my mind. Then I usually realize that I'm being an absolute idiot.

But! How do people deal with it if it finally happens? Do you just move on? Or do you try to focus the positive?

Also, I'd love to hear what has given people the ick about their male/men partners to see if my experience is matching up or if I'm seeing red flags that I'm pretending are the ick.

... Read moreWe've all been there, right? That sudden, inexplicable wave of repulsion toward someone you're dating, or even just someone you know. It's often dubbed 'the ick,' and it can hit you like a ton of bricks, turning attraction into aversion in a split second. But what is 'the ick' exactly, and why does it happen? From my perspective, 'the ick' isn't always about a genuine red flag. Sometimes, it's a completely irrational reaction to something minor—a specific mannerism, a phrase, or even how someone sips their drink. It’s that moment when your brain just decides, 'Nope, can't unsee that!' It feels like a switch flips, and suddenly, the person you were interested in becomes... well, *icky*. So, what are some common 'icks' I've heard about or personally encountered? You'd be surprised by the variety! Many people get the ick from things like: Over-the-top public displays of affection that feel performative rather than genuine. Someone talking about their exes constantly early on in a relationship. Using baby talk when they're a grown adult, especially in public. Poor table manners, like chewing with their mouth open or making gross noises. Excessive bragging about their money or achievements. Being overly dramatic about minor inconveniences. And here's a funny one, inspired by that meme we've all seen: someone trying too hard to be cool or to impress you, to the point where their effort itself becomes an 'ick.' It's like they're so worried about giving you 'the ick' that they inadvertently create it! My face during a plane crash, indeed, to avoid any 'ick' potential! But once you *get the ick*, what's next? This is where it gets tricky. There's no one-size-fits-all answer on *how to get over the ick*. Some people say you just have to move on, seeing it as a sign that the person isn't for you. Others try to push past it, focusing on the positive qualities and hoping the 'ick' fades away. I think it depends on the severity and the reason behind it. If it’s a genuinely superficial 'ick' (like a quirky laugh or a weird fashion choice), maybe it's worth trying to look past it. We all have our quirks, and nobody's perfect. But if the 'ick' stems from something deeper—like a lack of respect, poor communication, or a fundamental incompatibility—then it might actually be your subconscious trying to tell you something important. In those cases, it's probably a good idea to pay attention. Ultimately, dealing with 'the ick' often comes down to self-reflection: Is this a minor annoyance, or a major red flag? And am I willing to accept this feeling, or do I need to re-evaluate the connection?

I personally don't get any 'ick' from my current partner, but I did get the 'ick' from my ex's. I doubt it's accurate for everyone but for me I realized the ick often represented something I didn't like about my partner, for me it's a sign to leave.
