Cortisol-friendly morning routine

As someone who is very sensitive to stress and has trouble regulating my emotions in response to stress, I have found that learning about Cortisol (our body’s primary stress hormone) and building a Cortisol-friendly morning routine has helped me feel more empowered and set up for success as I begin my day. I wanted to share my routine with you:

☀️ Get up right away instead of snoozing

Our body naturally releases cortisol between 6-9am to help us wake up and stay alert. When we snooze, we interrupt this natural process and can confuse our body, leading to grogginess and cortisol dysregulation later.

💦 Drink water before caffeine

If you love coffee in the morning, try drinking water first to help your body wake up naturally and to avoid spiking your cortisol and leading to an energy crash later.

📱 Avoid immediate screen time

Scrolling on social media or checking our inbox can increase our stress, so it’s best to avoid it first thing in the morning. Try starting off your morning with an activity that encourages clarity and focus, such as journaling, taking deep breaths, or stepping outside for some fresh air.

... Read moreBuilding on my journey to master a cortisol-friendly morning, I’ve realized many of you might be looking for even deeper dives into specific concerns, especially around conditions like PCOS or how supplements fit into the picture. It's truly a game-changer when you understand how your body works, and a personalized routine can make all the difference for your energy, focus, and mood throughout the day. For those navigating PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), managing cortisol is absolutely crucial. PCOS often comes hand-in-hand with insulin resistance and chronic inflammation, both of which can exacerbate cortisol dysregulation. A stress-spike in the morning can worsen insulin sensitivity, making blood sugar control harder. So, those initial steps like avoiding the snooze button, hydrating promptly, and ditching immediate screen time become even more impactful. For my friends with PCOS, consider adding a short, gentle walk outdoors to your morning. Sunlight exposure helps regulate your circadian rhythm, which in turn supports healthy cortisol patterns. Also, focusing on a protein-rich breakfast soon after waking can help stabilize blood sugar, minimizing another potential cortisol trigger. It’s all about creating a ripple effect of calm and balance. Another common question I get is about supplements and how they can support a cortisol-friendly morning routine. While I always recommend discussing any new supplements with your doctor, especially if you have underlying health conditions like PCOS, some popular options include: Ashwagandha: An adaptogenic herb known for helping the body manage stress and balance cortisol levels. Taking it in the morning (or evening, depending on individual response) can contribute to a calmer start. Magnesium: Essential for over 300 bodily functions, including stress response. Many people are deficient. A magnesium supplement can help promote relaxation and improve sleep quality, indirectly assisting morning cortisol regulation. B Vitamins: Crucial for energy production and nerve function, B vitamins play a role in managing stress. A B-complex often supports overall adrenal health. Vitamin D: Often referred to as the 'sunshine vitamin,' Vitamin D deficiency is common and can impact mood and energy. Ensuring adequate levels can support overall well-being and stress resilience. Remember, supplements are just that – supplements to a healthy lifestyle, not replacements. Let's also revisit caffeine and cortisol. While my original tip was to drink water first, some of you might be wondering if there's an optimal time for coffee. Many experts suggest waiting 90 minutes to two hours after waking before your first cup. This allows your natural morning cortisol peak to subside slightly, so you’re not layering caffeine's stimulating effects on top of an already high cortisol level. This can help prevent the afternoon energy crash and reduce overall stress on your adrenal glands. If you’re really sensitive, consider alternatives like green tea (which has L-theanine to temper the caffeine jitters) or even a warm, herbal adaptogenic blend. Ultimately, the goal is to empower yourself with knowledge and create a morning ritual that genuinely supports your body’s natural rhythms. Experiment, listen to your body, and don't be afraid to adjust until you find what makes you feel your best – full of energy, sharp focus, and a positive mood.
