Living authentically as nonbinary is a unique journey for each person, and it's important to recognize that gender identity doesn’t have a singular look or set of labels. From my personal experience, embracing they/them pronouns while expressing a femme identity has allowed me to live more comfortably in myself. It can be confusing for others when someone identifies differently than what they expect, but that confusion doesn't negate the validity of our identity. For example, being okay with being called a girlfriend while not identifying as a girl might seem contradictory to some, but it actually reflects the fluidity and personal nature of relationships and gender. Language and labels are tools that help us communicate who we are, but they can also be flexible and adapt to each person's lived reality. In the broader LGBTQ+ community, terms like #nonbinary, #lesbian, #sapphic, and #lgbtq intersect in complex ways that enrich our identities and experiences. Wearing femme clothing or presenting femininely doesn’t mean someone identifies as female, and using they/them pronouns is a way to honor gender diversity beyond the binary. What has helped me most is honestly sharing how I feel and educating those around me with patience. It’s important to remember that identity is deeply personal; your understanding or confusion doesn’t cancel someone else’s truth or experience. Creating spaces where people feel seen and validated is vital for mental health and self-acceptance.
