Exploring the city of Ambato for a day, part 1 😋 Explorando la ciudad de Ambato por un día, parte 1 😋
Visiting Ambato offers a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in both culture and nature, and I’ve found it’s best experienced on foot with some local taxi rides. One highlight that really stood out to me was the Botanical Garden – it’s not just a peaceful retreat but a place rich with diverse flora, including familiar plants like irises and monsteras. The biodiversity there really surprised me; it felt like stepping into a living museum of Ecuadorian plant life. The Casa Museo Martínez Holguín was especially captivating. Walking through this historic home gave me a glimpse into Ambato’s social and cultural development through the eyes of one of its most important families. I appreciated how the museum preserved artifacts and stories that paint a vivid picture of the city’s past. Exploring the Museo Juan León Mera further deepened my understanding of Ecuadorian literature and history, especially since Mera is such an influential figure with his novel "Cumandá." It felt like walking alongside Ecuador’s literary heritage. One practical tip for fellow solo travelers: many places like the Botanical Garden have a small entry fee (around one dollar), which goes towards maintaining the sites. On-site staff are approachable and helpful, even if you need some help with directions or catching a taxi. Additionally, the city’s main roads and crossings can be a little tricky on foot, so keeping alert while navigating is key for safety. Also, trying local street food and catching a glimpse of daily Ambato life adds to the experience — from bustling markets to quiet riversides. Overall, Ambato offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and cultural richness, making it a rewarding destination for solo travelers looking to explore Ecuador beyond the usual tourist spots. I’m already excited to plan part 2 of this adventure and see what more this charming city has in store!
