Healing from Church Hurt

If you've ever felt like you weren't good enough for God...

If church made you feel guilty for struggling...

If you were told your depression meant you didn't have enough faith...

If pastors made you feel like you had to perform to earn God's love...

That's spiritual abuse.

And a lot of us don't even realize it happened to us. We just thought WE were the problem.

But here's the truth: God never made you feel that way. PEOPLE did.

Church culture did. Religious manipulation did.

Part of healing is recognizing what was done to you so you can separate the lies from the truth.

You're not broken. You were hurt by a broken system.

And that's not the same thing.

... Read moreWhen I first realized I was experiencing church hurt, it felt like my entire world was crumbling. The places I sought solace and community had become sources of pain, leaving me feeling manipulated and exploited. It's a heavy burden to carry, and truly, the first step towards healing is simply acknowledging that what you went through was real and valid. You're not imagining things, and as the article so profoundly states, you weren't broken; you were hurt by a broken system, by people who might have used their spiritual authority to manipulate rather than uplift. For me, healing began by giving myself permission to feel all the emotions – the anger, confusion, sadness, and even a deep sense of betrayal. It's okay to grieve the loss of what you thought church was, or what you hoped it would be. I remember feeling so much guilt for my struggles, as if my depression meant I lacked faith. But realizing that this wasn't God's intention, that it was human 'rules and religion' suffocating genuine 'hope, help, and healing,' was a massive turning point. One crucial step I took was setting clear boundaries. This meant taking a break from church, unfollowing certain accounts, and even having difficult conversations with people who were part of the hurtful experience. It’s not about quitting faith, but about quitting the harassment and manipulation that can sometimes masquerade as spirituality. Protecting your peace is paramount. Another vital part of my journey was finding safe spaces and voices that resonated with true compassion and understanding. This might mean seeking out a new spiritual community that prioritizes grace over performance, or it could mean finding a therapist or counselor who specializes in religious or spiritual trauma. Talking about your experiences with someone who can offer an objective, supportive perspective can be incredibly liberating. Don't underestimate the power of external support to help you process the manipulation you've endured. Rebuilding my understanding of God and faith outside of the hurtful narrative was also key. I started reading different theological perspectives, focusing on love, grace, and compassion rather than fear and guilt. This allowed me to separate the true essence of spirituality from the human errors and exploitation I had experienced. It's a personal journey of rediscovery, where you get to define what 'hope, help, and healing' truly look like for you, free from external pressures and performance demands. Finally, practicing self-compassion became my daily mantra. Healing isn't a linear path; there will be good days and bad days. Allow yourself patience and kindness. Engage in activities that nourish your soul – whether it's spending time in nature, creative expression, or connecting with trusted friends. Remember, you are worthy of love, healing, and a genuine spiritual life, free from the shadow of spiritual abuse. You are not alone in this journey, and there is light on the other side of the hurt.
