@New Therapist Network🪴 When we focus primarily on content the “idk what to talk about” sessions can feel daunting because we’re thinking: Okay… so what do we do now?

When you’re process focused the I don’t know becomes information! Instead of searching for a new topic we can get curious about what’s happening right now. It makes space for questions like:

🫶🏾 What’s it like to sit here and not know?

🫶🏾 What happens in your body when you try to find something?

🫶🏾 Is there a part of you that feels pressure to perform therapy ‘correctly’?

This is the shift we’ve been unpacking inside the New Therapist Network the last couple weeks: the difference between gathering insight and processing in session.

Our async psychoed threads have been all about:

🫶🏾 understanding what processing actually means

🫶🏾 moving from analysis ➡️ experience

... Read moreFrom my experience as a therapist, I've found that embracing the 'I don’t know' moments in sessions can open up a richer space for healing and connection. Many new therapists feel anxious during these times, worried about not having the right questions or topics ready. However, shifting the focus from trying to control the content to being present with the process allows both therapist and client to explore deeper layers of experience. When a client sits with uncertainty or silence, rather than rushing to fill the space with topics or solutions, it’s powerful to ask what it’s like for them to be in that moment. Questions like ‘What sensations are arising in your body right now?’ or ‘Is there a part of you that feels stress or pressure about this session?’ help transform confusion or silence into valuable data that informs the therapeutic journey. This process-oriented approach reduces the performance pressure many therapists feel to ‘get it right’ and instead honors the client’s unfolding experience. It also builds tolerance for ambiguity, which is crucial for authentic exploration. In my practice, I encourage therapists to notice when they feel the urge to move on or fill a gap, and gently guide themselves and their clients into curiosity about what’s happening beneath the surface. The difference between gathering insight and processing is subtle but important. Gathering insight often happens through analysis or reflection outside of the session, while processing occurs in the session itself through experience and presence. Prioritizing process creates a more meaningful and transformative therapeutic space. Overall, leaning into the process rather than the content allows therapy to become more fluid and responsive. It’s a practice worth cultivating, especially for new therapists learning to trust the therapeutic process and their own presence.
