PNES awareness

2025/2/7 Edited to

... Read morePNES, or Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures, are often misunderstood and misdiagnosed, leading many patients to receive unnecessary treatment for epilepsy. This condition arises from psychological trauma rather than neurological causes. Understanding the distinction between PNES and epilepsy is crucial; while epilepsy is characterized by electrical discharges in the brain, PNES is typically a response to stressful life events and can manifest in many ways. Awareness is key in helping to combat the stigma surrounding PNES. Patients, often conscious during episodes, may experience a range of symptoms, including physical manifestations similar to epileptic seizures but with different underlying triggers. Educational resources and support systems can significantly improve patient outcomes. Those suffering from PNES can benefit from therapy tailored to address the emotional and psychological factors contributing to their condition. Establishing a proper diagnosis enables patients to receive appropriate care and avoid the distress of ongoing misdiagnosis and ineffective treatments. By fostering awareness and understanding of PNES, we can create a more supportive environment for those affected and encourage conversations that challenge misconceptions surrounding this condition.
