SN What is the Stiffness Number?

The SN (Stiffness Number) of the tube is the value used to tell how much structural strength the tube has when it is subjected to external pressure, especially the pressure from the soil and the traffic weight pressed on top. The SN value is in kilonewtons per square meter (kN / m ²) and is the value of laboratory tests based on international standards such as ISO 9969 or EN 13476. The test will place the tube in the tester and press it from above and below until the tube collapses vertically about 3% of the diameter. Then the value used to calculate the ring stiffness or the value. SN

The resulting value reflects the ability of the pipe to resist the force from

- Land weight

- Car over / road.

- Inlay depth.

- Side pressure from the soil.

A commonly used SN value.

SN4 = General / Municipal Drainage Works

SN6 = Road with truck

SN8 = Main Street / Deep Embedded

SN10-SN16 = Extra Heavy Duty, such as Airport

The unit of SN is kN / m ².

For example, SN6 is 6 kN / m ².

High SN = stiffer pipe → more soil pressure resistant

SN did not say that "the pipe can receive water pressure."

(Internal water pressure must see PN value separately)

In short, SN is the standard number used to tell the hardness of the curl pipe when pressed from the outside. The more SN, the harder and more suitable for heavy or deep-seated work. And SN is the key to designing and choosing the curl pipe in drainage and underground structural work.

Credit:

ISO 9969 / EN 13476 - Ring stiffness test method

The document describes the SN measurement of pipelines systematically according to international standards.

SN Testing Procedure (ISO 9969) - PDF. SN6 and SN8 testing procedures include both computed samples and equipment used.
