🌾 What actually causes celiac disease?

Many people believe celiac disease is caused by eating too much gluten.

That’s a myth.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks the small intestine after gluten is eaten.

Scientists believe it develops from a combination of:

... Read moreLiving with celiac disease has taught me just how complex this condition really is. Many people mistakenly believe that eating gluten alone causes celiac disease, but in reality, it's an autoimmune disorder where your immune system attacks your small intestine after gluten exposure. From my personal experience and what I've learned over time, genetics play a big role in whether you might develop celiac disease. If it runs in your family, your risk is significantly higher. Beyond genetics, environmental triggers like infections or even stress can activate the disease. For me, understanding that it’s not just about avoiding gluten but also managing these triggers helped me better handle flare-ups. The damage caused by gluten in celiac patients prevents proper nutrient absorption, which is why symptoms can range from digestive issues to fatigue and even skin problems. The best approach I’ve found is following a strict gluten-free diet combined with regularly monitoring my health and staying aware of other autoimmune conditions. This lifestyle change is challenging but empowering because it puts control back in your hands. If you’re newly diagnosed or suspect you might have celiac, learning about its multifactorial causes can prepare you mentally and physically for what lies ahead. Remember, celiac disease is not contagious or caused by eating gluten in excess—it’s your body’s immune reaction triggered by a combination of genes and environment. Sharing this insight can help reduce stigma and support others in their wellness journeys too.
