Started vegetables from seeds.

These were in the pot on the patio, but I decided even though it be too late to transplant into the ground. I finally did. I hope they will thrive until summer is finished. The soil there is a lot sandy, but I am hoping then I don’t have to ask my daughter to water so much, the ground would be a little better with moisture. So what do you guys think now compare to 3 weeks ago?#backyardfarming #garden #lemon8community#gardensponsership #Lemon8 #Lemon8Diary #lemon8creator #lemon8home #lemon8food

... Read moreYou know that feeling when your little seedlings are bursting out of their pots, telling you it's time for a bigger home? That's exactly where I was recently! Transplanting, for me, is the exciting process of moving those young plants from their starter pots or trays into their permanent spot in the garden. It’s a vital step for many vegetables that need a head start indoors, allowing them to grow strong before facing the great outdoors. I find it so rewarding to nurture them from tiny seeds to sturdy plants ready for the garden bed. My patio pots were getting crowded, and even though I worried it might be a bit late in the season, I knew my vegetables needed more room to really thrive. I made the decision to move them into the ground, hoping they'd settle in before summer's end. The soil in that part of my garden is quite sandy, which worried me a bit about moisture retention. But on the flip side, I'm secretly hoping the ground will hold moisture better than pots, meaning fewer urgent calls to my daughter to water them! Every gardener has these little dilemmas, right? If you're wondering how to tackle transplanting your own vegetable seedlings, here are the 8 steps I follow, based on my own experience: Preparation is Key: Hardening Off. Before any big move, I always make sure my seedlings are 'hardened off.' This means gradually introducing them to outdoor conditions – a few hours a day for about a week, increasing exposure to sun and wind. It's like sending them to boot camp before the real battle! Timing it Right. I try to pick a cloudy day or late afternoon to transplant. This reduces the shock from intense sun. For my latest batch, I knew I was pushing the season a bit, but sometimes you just have to go for it! Prep the Garden Bed. Since my soil is sandy, I spent some time amending it with compost. This helps improve water retention and provides essential nutrients. A well-prepared bed is half the battle won, in my opinion. Water Seedlings Beforehand. I give my seedlings a good drink a few hours before transplanting. This makes it easier to remove them from their pots and keeps their roots hydrated. Digging the Perfect Hole. I dig holes that are just a little wider and deeper than the seedling's root ball. This gives the roots room to spread out comfortably. Gentle Removal & Placement. This is the delicate part! I gently squeeze the sides of the pot, turn it over, and carefully slide the seedling out, supporting the base. I try my best not to disturb the roots too much. Then, I place the seedling in the prepared hole, making sure it's at the same depth it was in the pot (unless it's a tomato, which likes to be buried deeper!). Backfill and Water In. I gently backfill the soil around the seedling, lightly firming it to remove air pockets. Immediately after, I give them a thorough watering. This helps settle the soil around the roots and gives them a much-needed drink. Post-Transplant Care. For the first few days, I keep a close eye on them, especially if it's sunny. Sometimes I'll provide a temporary shade cover if they look stressed. Mulching around the base can also help retain moisture and keep weeds down, which is super helpful for my sandy patch. It's always a gamble when you transplant, especially with challenging soil conditions. I'm really hoping my vegetables will thrive and give us a bountiful harvest until the end of summer. Fingers crossed the ground holds moisture better than I expect! In my latest vegetable update, they're looking a little shy but strong after the move. I'll be sharing more progress soon! Watching these plants grow from tiny seeds to productive garden residents is one of the most satisfying parts of gardening for me. If you're thinking about transplanting, don't be afraid to give it a try! Every garden journey is unique, and learning along the way is part of the fun.
