Well that seems unusually “stiff” 😂
Having worked with clients over 40, I've noticed that shoulder stiffness is a frequent concern—especially among women. This stiffness can stem from various factors such as decreased joint lubrication, muscle tightness, or even early signs of conditions like frozen shoulder. When attempting to raise or stretch the shoulder, it’s important to recognize the difference between normal resistance from tight muscles and actual joint stiffness. Clients often report discomfort or an unusually stiff sensation when trying to move their shoulder, similar to 'lifting a heavy weight' even without resistance. What’s crucial in these cases is adopting a gentle, progressive approach to stretching. I advise beginning with small range-of-motion exercises and gradually increasing intensity over time. Warm-up activities, like gentle arm circles or applying heat, can also help in reducing stiffness before stretching. Incorporating targeted stretches such as cross-body shoulder stretches or doorway stretches can improve flexibility without causing pain. However, if stiffness persists or worsens, it might be wise to seek professional evaluation to rule out any underlying issues. Remember, everyone’s body is different, especially as we age. Tailoring your stretch routine to individual needs, considering past injuries or conditions, is key to safe and effective results. Consistency and patience are essential in overcoming stiffness and maintaining shoulder health as we age.
