For example, in debates around controversial topics like evolution or flat earth theories, people often cling to beliefs that support their survival instincts or social identity rather than purely evidence-based conclusions. This survival-centric brain evolution helps explain why misinformation can spread rapidly—because information that sparks fear or tribal loyalty triggers stronger engagement than neutral facts. It also sheds light on the tension between science, which demands evidence and skepticism, and religion, which relies more on faith and community bonds. Genealogy, too, can affect beliefs as knowing one's lineage often ties into group identity and worldviews. Understanding that our brain’s primary function is survival can foster greater empathy for diverse perspectives.
