Embarking on a watercolor practice routine can be both exciting and challenging. During my own experience around Day 6 of consistent practice, I noticed a significant improvement in how I perceived and rendered light and shadow, which are crucial for adding depth and atmosphere to any painting. Specifically exploring scenes such as 'Surrounding Willow' helped me focus not only on the subject but on how natural lighting transforms it. One tip I found invaluable was experimenting with the transparency of watercolor layers. It allows the light to seemingly emit from within the painting, creating a more lifelike effect. Don’t shy away from letting some white space remain unpainted to preserve highlights. After several sessions, I gradually built up confidence in combining technical skill with creativity, leading me to start planning my own book cover designs. Capturing the mood with subtle shifts in tone and shadow truly elevates the story a cover can tell before a reader even opens the book.
