Skincare Basics: Using Tretinoin

Nothing will give you glass skin like prescription retinol! But retinization aka the purge phase (the period of time when your skin adjusts to a retinoid treatment) is brutal! Here’s how I successfully incorporated Tret into my routine to get the best skin of my life.

1) Do not let your dermatologist give you a strength higher than 0.015 at first. Using Tret is a long marathon, not a sprint.

2) During the purge phase, always apply Tret AFTER your moisturizer to limit overexposure.

3) Cut out ALL other active ingredients in your skincare. You will wreck your skin barrier if you don’t.

4) Utilize short-term contact. Applying Tret for 30 mins and then rinsing off is a WONDERFUL way to introduce your skin to this new prescription and still get results.

5) WEAR SUNSCREEN! Your skin will worsen if you use Tret but don’t apply an SPF of 30 or higher every. single. day.

... Read moreTretinoin is a potent retinoid renowned for its ability to transform skin texture and appearance. As a form of prescription retinol, it's crucial to understand how to use it properly to avoid common pitfalls during the retinization process, also known as the purge phase. This stage can lead to initial breakouts and skin sensitivity, so patience is paramount. When incorporating Tretinoin, start with a lower strength, ideally no higher than 0.015%, to allow your skin time to acclimate. It’s advisable to apply it at night after your moisturizer. This technique helps mitigate irritation by providing a protective barrier without compromising the efficacy of the Tret. Avoid mixing with other potent ingredients like acids or Vitamin C to prevent overwhelming your skin barrier. Additionally, implementing short-term contact with Tret—applying it for just 30 minutes before washing off—can be a gentler introduction, ensuring your skin adjusts while still reaping the benefits. Sun protection is non-negotiable; wearing a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily is essential as Tretinoin can increase sun sensitivity. Cast aside prior misconceptions about being able to skip this step—consistent application of sunscreen is crucial for maintaining skin health and achieving lasting results. These tips can collectively help you navigate the Tretinoin journey effectively.
