Training for a half marathon as a type one diabetic ❤️ huge shout out to @Beyond Type 1 because those videos last year really inspired me 🥲 #t1d #t1dlife #typeonediabetes #marathontraining #disabilitytiktok
Training for a half marathon with type 1 diabetes is definitely a unique challenge, but with the right mindset and preparation, it's absolutely achievable. One of the biggest hurdles I faced early on was learning how to balance my blood sugar levels during long runs. This meant closely monitoring my glucose before, during, and after training sessions and adjusting my insulin and nutrition accordingly. I found that carrying quick sources of glucose like gels or candies helped me avoid lows mid-run, which can be especially dangerous and discouraging. Also, scheduling my runs around the times when my insulin is working less aggressively helped in maintaining more stable blood sugar. Beyond the physiological aspects, staying motivated was key. Videos and stories from organizations like Beyond Type 1 inspired me to see what's possible despite diabetes. Connecting with others in the #t1d and #marathontraining communities online provided me with invaluable support and advice. Lastly, I learned not to push myself too hard on days when my blood sugar was erratic. Listening to your body, staying hydrated, and having a flexible training plan are essential. This journey has been empowering, showing me that type 1 diabetes doesn’t have to limit my ambitions, and hopefully my experience can encourage others managing T1D to pursue their fitness goals too.
