Busting Another Teething Myth

#emergingcreator Teething itself does not cause a cough. However, babies who are teething often drool much more than usual, and that extra saliva can lead to:

A mild cough, especially when lying down.

Occasional gagging on saliva.

A mild rash around the mouth, chin, or chest from drooling.

A cough is more likely to be caused by a cold, allergies, or another illness if it is accompanied by:

Fever (100.4°F/38°C or higher in babies under 3 months, or a persistent/high fever in older babies).

Runny or stuffy nose.

Wheezing or difficulty breathing.

Poor feeding or fewer wet diapers.

A cough that is severe, worsening, or lasts more than a week.

For a mild drool-related cough:

Keep your baby upright after feedings.

Gently wipe away drool and use a barrier cream if the skin is irritated.

Offer chilled (not frozen) teething toys if your baby is old enough.

If your baby has trouble breathing, is coughing continuously, has a high fever, or seems unusually sleepy or difficult to wake, seek medical care right away.

... Read moreAs a parent who has navigated the teething phase with my own child, I've learned firsthand how confusing this time can be. Many caregivers worry when their baby starts coughing alongside teething, but this is often due to increased saliva production rather than the teething itself. The excess drool can accumulate and irritate the throat, causing a mild cough especially when the baby is lying down. I found that keeping my baby upright after feedings helped reduce this discomfort significantly. It's also common for babies to experience occasional gagging on saliva or develop a mild rash around their mouth, chin, or chest from constant drooling. Using a gentle barrier cream and wiping away drool promptly helped manage these symptoms effectively. Offering chilled, but not frozen, teething toys provided soothing relief and distracted my child during tough moments. However, it's crucial to watch out for signs that may indicate something more serious than teething. If your baby has a fever above 100.4°F (38°C), persistent cough lasting more than a week, wheezing, difficulty breathing, or reduced feeding and wet diapers, these could be signs of an infection or allergies requiring medical attention. When my baby exhibited such symptoms, I didn't hesitate to consult a pediatrician. Through this experience, I realized that understanding the difference between typical teething symptoms and signs of illness can help parents respond more calmly and confidently. Remember, teething is a natural process, but persistent or severe symptoms warrant a healthcare provider's evaluation to ensure your baby's health and comfort.
