5 Foods We Stopped Buying After Cancer

A cancer diagnosis changes how you look at everything…

especially what you bring into your home.

When we started learning more about nutrition, inflammation, and environmental exposures, we realized many everyday foods were working against our health instead of supporting it.

So we started making some changes.

Here are just 5 of the foods we stopped buying.

1️⃣ Sugary Cereals

Most breakfast cereals are made with refined grains, added sugars, and synthetic vitamins. They spike blood sugar and leave you hungry again shortly after.

2️⃣ Instant Ramen & Ultra-Processed Noodles

Highly processed noodles with flavor packets that often contain excessive sodium and additives.

3️⃣ Candy & Artificial Gummies

Many contain refined sugar, artificial dyes, and ingredients that provide zero nutritional value.

4️⃣ Flavored Chips & Snack Foods

These are typically made with industrial seed oils, artificial flavor enhancers, and refined starches designed to keep you craving more.

5️⃣ Processed Crackers and cookies

Many popular crackers are made with refined flour, seed oils, and preservatives.

We didn’t change everything overnight.

We simply started replacing highly processed foods with more real, whole foods whenever possible.

Small changes can make a big difference over time.

If you’re curious how modern foods are affecting our health, we break it down in this blog:

... Read moreAfter facing a cancer diagnosis, many of us begin to reassess not only medical treatments but also daily lifestyle choices — especially our diet. Cutting out highly processed and inflammatory foods was a critical step in my personal recovery journey. Sugary cereals, for example, might seem like a quick breakfast fix but often lead to blood sugar spikes that cause fatigue and cravings, which can negatively impact metabolic and gut health. Likewise, instant ramen and other ultra-processed noodles frequently contain excessive sodium and additives, contributing to inflammation and overall poor nutrition. Candy and artificial gummies are another category I now avoid. Beyond their empty calories, the artificial dyes and sweeteners offer no health benefits and can burden the body's detox systems. Flavored chips and snack foods, often fried in industrial seed oils like soybean or corn oil, introduce unhealthy omega-6 fats that promote inflammation, undermining immune health and possibly cancer prevention efforts. Processed crackers and cookies similarly rely on refined flours and preservatives that offer little nutritional value and can disrupt gut microbiome balance. Replacing these processed items with whole, unprocessed foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains has been essential in my ongoing health journey. It’s important to note that changes don’t have to be immediate or perfect. Gradually substituting these foods allowed my body to adjust and helped me sustain better eating habits long-term. One practical tip is reading ingredient labels carefully—avoiding items with long lists of unfamiliar chemicals or additives. Cooking more meals at home with whole ingredients increases control over what goes into your body. Additionally, staying informed about the impact of modern foods on inflammation and health through credible blogs and nutrition education resources empowers better choices. Ultimately, the body is designed to heal and thrive when given proper nourishment. This personal experience has shown me how powerful mindful eating can be in supporting metabolic health, reducing inflammation, and improving overall wellness after cancer. Small, consistent dietary adjustments can lead to meaningful improvements and reinforce a healthier lifestyle.
