For example, I stopped buying products with butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), a preservative classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as "possibly carcinogenic to humans." BHA is also suspected to interfere with hormones, which could affect fertility and fetal development. This pushed me to seek out cleaner alternatives without synthetic antioxidants. Sodium nitrate, frequently used in processed meats to preserve color and extend shelf life, is another additive I avoid. This preservative can lead to the formation of nitrosamines, which have been linked to DNA damage and cancer risk. Understanding this motivated me to reduce consumption of processed deli meats and opt for nitrate-free or freshly prepared options instead. In addition to preservatives, I pay close attention to texturizing agents such as disodium diphosphate and monocalcium phosphate. These additives—while helping maintain product consistency—contain phosphorus, and excessive intake is linked with kidney issues and cardiovascular risk. Reading labels carefully helps me avoid these additives to support long-term health. Another group of ingredients I’ve stopped buying are products containing sulfites, which are known for causing allergic reactions and may negatively affect the gut microbiome and nervous system. Given their possible link to cancer and type 2 diabetes, I now prefer fresh or frozen whole foods over processed options. Making these changes hasn’t been without effort. It requires more time to prepare meals from scratch and a sharper focus when grocery shopping. But this lifestyle shift has been rewarding—our family feels more energetic, and I have greater peace of mind knowing we’re minimizing exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. I encourage anyone concerned about food additives to start by reading labels and gradually replacing processed foods with whole, nutrient-rich alternatives. Small steps can lead to big improvements in health and well-being.
