A short cold shower can help boost mood
Cold water splash can wake you up, but did you know that a 5-mins cold shower can boost your mood and attention?
In one fMRI study, 33 adults took a 5-minute, head‑out, whole‑body cold bath while researchers measured heart, breathing, brain connectivity, and real‑time mood ratings. Right after the dip, participants consistently reported feeling more active, alert, attentive, proud, and inspired, and less distressed and nervous.
The brain data showed that this uplift in positive affect was tied to stronger coupling between key large‑scale networks: default mode (medial prefrontal), salience (anterior cingulate and rostral prefrontal), frontoparietal (posterior parietal), and visual lateral networks.
It also helps “feeling good” by triggering a release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and endorphin that help emotion regulation and reward processing.
