I’ve been driving the same car for over 10 years now. Blessed and praying to be able to upgrade soon!

Driving with hand controls gives me independence, but I also know not everyone with a spinal cord injury has this access.

That’s why resources matter. For me, my dad bought the car, and the modifications were covered through DARS(Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services).

Not every state calls it DARS, but every state has a Vocational Rehabilitation program that can help with driving modifications.

Here are some resources if you or someone you know is looking into adaptive driving:

🚗 DARS / State Vocational Rehabilitation Programs – Every state has some version of VR that can help with modifications.

🚗 NMEDA (National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association) – nmeda.org → Find certified dealers and specialists.

🚗 NHTSA – Adaptive Driving – nhtsa.gov/adaptive-driving → Info on licensing, safety, and adaptive equipment.

🚗 Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation – christopherreeve.org → Resource directory + financial assistance info.

🚗 United Spinal Association – unitedspinal.org → Advocacy + community resources.

🚗 Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (CDRS) – Certified specialists who train people to drive safely with adaptive equipment.

Accessibility isn’t a luxury — it’s a right. And the more we share, the more people can access the tools that give back independence.

... Read moreHey everyone! Following up on my last post about adaptive driving, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what truly made a difference for me: finding the right support and understanding how to access it. For those of us who experience life from a wheelchair, the idea of getting back behind the wheel after a spinal cord injury can feel daunting. I remember thinking, 'How will I even get from my wheelchair into the driver's seat?' That's where tools like my trusty sliding board came in – little things that make a huge difference in regaining that sense of independence and freedom. Driving with hand controls isn't just about getting from point A to point B; it's about reclaiming a piece of your life. Many of you might be searching for a 'certified driver rehabilitation specialist near me' or wondering about 'drivers rehabilitation programs.' Let me tell you, these specialists are game-changers. A Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) isn't just a driving instructor; they're experts who understand how your specific physical challenges might affect your ability to drive safely. They conduct comprehensive assessments – often including clinical evaluations of vision, cognition, and physical function, followed by an in-vehicle evaluation – to recommend appropriate vehicle modifications. Whether it’s hand controls, modified steering, or specialized foot controls, they provide personalized training to ensure your driving might look a little different, but it’s safe and effective. Finding one often starts with organizations like NMEDA (nmeda.org), where you can search for certified dealers and specialists in your area. Don't just pick the first one you see; interview a few if possible, and ensure they have experience with your specific needs. They’ll help you navigate everything from vehicle selection to licensing requirements for adaptive equipment. Another crucial piece of the puzzle is funding, which often comes up when people search for 'free certified driver rehabilitation specialist near me.' While the specialists themselves aren't usually free, Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) programs, like DARS in some states, are invaluable. These state-run programs are designed to help individuals with disabilities prepare for, obtain, or retain employment, and often, that includes funding for adaptive driving equipment and training. My experience with DARS was incredibly positive; they covered the modifications for my car, which was a massive relief. The key is to apply early and be thorough with your documentation. Be prepared for an intake interview and to provide medical records detailing your spinal cord injury and its impact. Every state has a version of a VR program, so search for your state's specific agency. They can guide you through the process, from initial assessment to securing financial aid for modifications that might otherwise be prohibitively expensive, truly enabling that independence. Don't forget about other resources! The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and United Spinal Association are fantastic not just for their community support but also for their extensive resource directories and information on financial assistance programs. They often have lists of grants or scholarships specifically for adaptive equipment or driver training. It’s about leveraging every available tool to ensure you get the access you deserve. Remember, regaining independence through driving is a process, but with the right resources and a dedicated CDRS, it’s absolutely achievable. Keep pushing for that freedom – you deserve it!
