SCI-FI BOOKS ON MY TBR 🌌

2024/12/4 Edited to

... Read moreAs someone who's always identified as a 'fantasy girly,' the world of sci-fi often felt a bit daunting. I mean, spaceships, advanced tech, complex scientific theories—it can be a lot to jump into when you're used to magic systems and mythical creatures! But lately, I've realized that sci-fi and fantasy are often two sides of the same coin, exploring human nature and extraordinary worlds, just with different explanations. So, I decided it was time to brave the unknown and curate a sci-fi TBR (To Be Read) list that even a fantasy devotee like me would be excited about. For anyone else looking to dip their toes into the genre, my first tip is to not be afraid to start with 'soft sci-fi' or even sci-fantasy blends. These often focus more on character development and accessible concepts rather than hard science, making the transition smoother. I look for stories that promise compelling plots and unique characters, much like I do in fantasy. For instance, a book like A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers, with its charming 'tea monk and robot' premise, sounds like a wonderfully cozy and philosophical read that won't overwhelm me with technical jargon. It feels like a gentle introduction to exploring different kinds of relationships and world-building. Another approach is to lean into subgenres that offer familiar thrills. If you love a good mystery or a high-stakes adventure in fantasy, you might enjoy sci-fi thrillers or space operas. Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, for example, explores the fascinating concept of a 'different reality' and alternative lives, which sounds incredibly engaging. It's less about the science of how it works and more about the thrilling consequences and moral dilemmas, making it feel very accessible. Plus, knowing there's an Apple TV series adaptation just makes it more exciting! Similarly, Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel, with its 'time-bending mystery' spanning different eras and worlds, appeals to my love for intricate, interconnected narratives that slowly unravel. What truly draws me in are stories with strong emotional cores or unique hooks. The Last Hour Between Worlds by Melissa Caruso, featuring a detective and a rival teaming up to stop a 'mysterious clock,' sounds like a fantastic blend of mystery and speculative elements. It has that intriguing, almost magical feel that fantasy often provides, but with a sci-fi twist. And I Think We've Been Here Before by Suzy Krause, which deals with a 'terminal illness' amidst impending 'global doom,' promises a deeply human story set against a sci-fi backdrop. These kinds of books prove that sci-fi isn't just about advanced technology; it's about exploring the human condition in extraordinary circumstances. Ultimately, my goal is to explore the diversity within sci-fi, finding stories that resonate with my love for imaginative worlds and compelling characters. If you're a fellow fantasy enthusiast or simply new to sci-fi, I hope my TBR gives you some ideas. What are your absolute must-read sci-fi recommendations, especially for someone just starting their journey? I'm always on the lookout for more gems!

I read Dark Matter years ago and am so glad it’s getting attention again. Crouch is a great storyteller.

🧪SCI-FI + PARASITIC HORROR TROPES
🔬Sci-fi horror and parasitic horror overlap, but they don’t feel the same to me. 🔬SCI-FI HORROR is usually about the unknown — aliens, experiments, or something we don’t fully understand yet. 🔬The fear comes from not knowing what it is or how it works. 👾PARASITIC HORROR takes it further.
