Most of what gets missed with PMOS is not what doctors are trained to look for f

7/30 Edited to

... Read moreBased on recent studies and community insights, it is clear that PMOS (Polycystic Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome) is vastly underdiagnosed, with around 70% of affected women remaining undetected. This gap arises partly because many doctors are trained to look for reproductive symptoms such as fertility issues and irregular cycles but often miss the metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors that pose a greater threat to long-term health. From personal experience, patients often report frustration when symptoms like insulin resistance, heart risk markers, or mental health challenges go unaddressed during routine visits. There is a growing call within the medical community for formal integration of PMOS education into OB/GYN and endocrinology training programs. Current teachings label PMOS as common and treatable, but the clinical follow-through for diagnosis is insufficient and inconsistent. This leads to delayed or missed diagnosis until more severe symptoms appear, which can be detrimental. Another crucial aspect often overlooked is mental health. Research shows that women with PCOS/PMOS experience much higher rates of emotional dysregulation and self-harm tendencies. Therefore, incorporating routine suicide-risk and self-harm screenings into PMOS care could drastically improve patient safety and support. For women living with PMOS, sharing experiences highlights how addressing only reproductive symptoms without considering metabolic and emotional health leaves many aspects of their condition unmanaged. In summary, improving awareness among healthcare providers about the full spectrum of PMOS symptoms—including metabolic, cardiovascular, and psychiatric—alongside better diagnostic protocols, could save millions of women from long-term health consequences. Encouraging patients to advocate for comprehensive checkups beyond reproduction and seeking second opinions also helps bridge this care gap.
