Labor Replacement Cute Robot Selling Souvenirs in Japan
Yomiuri Shimbun reports that Narita Airport, Chiba Prefecture, is trying to open an unstaffed souvenir shop using a "Pickru" robot to pick up goods for customers, hoping for a solution in an era of steady decline in labor.
The store is located near the domestic boarding gate, Terminal 3, which supports low-cost airlines. Inside a 7-by-2.7-meter glass booth, there is a 1.2-meter robot that looks like a pet, moving along the rails to pick up 12 different deposit boxes using a "tail" attached to the delivery suction head through the front receiver.
Customers can purchase through the screen with credit card or QR code payment. It takes only 1 minute without staff, with an average of 20 users per day.
The project is a collaboration between Narita International Airport and the Nomura Research Institute (NRI), which developed a prototype store to study the feasibility of using robotics to help retail in the future, amid a declining trend in the working population in Japan, which is expected to decline to around 7 million in the near future and inevitably affect the retail sector.
NRI identifies the advantages of the Pickru Store including low initial investment, reducing theft risk, accommodating a wide range of goods sizes, and attracting attention from passengers with a friendly look.
The Pickru Store will be open until December 15, 2025, before the airport operator evaluates the trial late or early next year.
