U.S. temporarily suspends Thailand trade talks
On November 15, 2025, the Director-General of the Department of Information and a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave a press release on the latest developments in the Thai-Cambodian border situation, revealing that last night, the Deputy Trade Representative of the United States said: "Request a temporary suspension of trade talks between Thailand and the United States and will resume negotiations when the Thai side vows to return to the Joint Declaration of Thailand-Cambodia."
Thailand is disappointed with the move, saying that "security and security issues, especially the Thai-Cambodian bilateral, must be separated from trade issues, which are of common Thai-U.S. interest."
Nik Det also mentioned last night's phone conversation between Prime Minister Anin Chan Wegul and US President Donald Trump, saying that "the United States does not wish to interfere with the resolution of both countries," stating that the issue of international trade and third-country tariff measures is an economic policy that Thailand will consider carefully in the framework of trade cooperation.
According to Nigdet, Thailand continues to welcome the creative role of the United States in encouraging Thailand and Cambodia to reduce tensions in order to lead to lasting peace.
When asked by reporters about the U.S. tariff response after this, Nikorn stated that Mr. Antoine had explained to the U.S. president that "Thailand intends to distinguish the border from trade negotiations and is determined to move forward with free trade with the United States."
Nikdet also said that the US president expressed his understanding after the Prime Minister informed him of the matter, including saying that he would talk to the US Trade Representative and respond teasingly to the Prime Minister's post that "if landmines are managed, tariff cuts will be requested," with Trump saying it would be a pleasure.
According to Nikdet, the Ministry of Economic Affairs will continue to negotiate taxes, and the State Department hopes that discussions with the U.S. president and the Malaysian prime minister will help pressure Cambodia to understand Thailand's goals.
