Anyone else have slow writing days??

2024/12/15 Edited to

... Read moreOh, writing days! Sometimes they feel like a sprint, and other times, it's more like wading through treacle. I totally get it. Just yesterday, I was sitting down for a dedicated writing session, laptop open and ready, and even though I've already hit an exciting 37,000 words on my current project, the words just weren't flowing. It was definitely one of those slow writing days, and I found myself wondering, 'Am I the only one who feels this way?' I even saw the 'Writing on my laptop today' message on my screen and wished the inspiration would match the sentiment! It’s so easy to get discouraged when the creative well feels dry. I used to beat myself up over it, thinking I wasn't a 'real' writer if I couldn't churn out pages every single day. But over time, I've learned that slow writing days are just part of the journey, a normal ebb and flow of the creative process. Sometimes, it’s burnout from pushing too hard, especially when you're deep into a large project. Other times, it’s simply a need for a fresh perspective, or maybe even just a good night's sleep. Life outside our writing world can also sneak in and impact our focus, leaving us staring blankly at the screen. What I've found incredibly helpful on these challenging days is to first acknowledge the feeling without judgment. Instead of forcing myself to write, which often makes things worse, I sometimes shift gears. Maybe I’ll do some light editing on previous chapters, brainstorm future plot points, or even just read a chapter of an inspiring book to get my creative juices flowing indirectly. Sometimes, stepping away from the screen for a bit – even just for a cup of tea, a short walk, or some gentle stretching – can completely reset my brain. I’ve noticed that when I return to my laptop after a break, the words often start to align much more smoothly, almost as if my subconscious was working on the problem while I was away. Another strategy that works for me is changing my environment. If I'm always writing at the same desk, sometimes moving to a cafe, a different room, or even just curling up on the couch with my laptop can spark new ideas. The change of scenery, even subtle, can break the mental block. If that doesn't work, I sometimes try a 'dump draft' where I just write anything that comes to mind, no matter how bad, just to get the fingers moving and the internal critic to quiet down. Connecting with other writers in the #writingcommunity has also been a game-changer. Hearing that others experience the same struggles makes me feel less alone and more motivated to keep going. We're all in this together, trying to get our stories out into the world, one word at a time. And celebrating those small victories, like reaching 37k words, even on a slow day, is crucial. It’s a reminder of how far you’ve come and that persistence truly pays off. So, if you're having a slow writing day today, know that it's okay. Take a deep breath, be kind to yourself, and remember, every word written, no matter how slowly, brings you closer to 'The End' of your amazing story.
