Moms of autistic children

#Lemon8Diary #lemon8diarychallenge

I took my daughter to the park the other day and it got me thinking. It was just us for a while and she was about to play however she wanted with all the equipment but when more children showed up she wanted to play with them and almost force them to play by her rules no matter the other kid’s age or gender. And I got so frustrated once I saw the other children getting upset with her. Not because they didn’t want to play with her but because she doesn’t understand the boundaries the other kids are trying to express.

So I sat with her on the swings and she cried in my lap while the other children around us played. But suddenly it all fell away. The noises of the other kids and I was focused just on her cries. She doesn’t understand, she just wanted to play. So I kissed her cheeks and hugged her and then played on the swings for a while before going home.

My take away here is that she didn’t understand what was wrong with her play, she was just being herself and I want to continue to provide an environment where she can be herself. To do so requires patience, some research, and also time for myself to recharge too.

... Read moreAs a mother raising an autistic child, understanding your child's unique needs is crucial. Children with autism may struggle with social interactions and understand social cues, which can lead to frustration in group settings. This article emphasizes the importance of patience and creating a safe space for children to express themselves. It's also vital for mothers to give themselves grace and find moments to recharge. Support groups or forums can provide valuable insights and shared experiences from other mothers facing similar challenges. Resources such as workshops, books, and websites dedicated to autism can equip you with tools to better navigate this unique parenting journey. Remember, prioritizing mental health and well-being is essential not only for you but also for your child. By embracing vulnerability and sharing your experiences, you contribute to a broader community that understands the joys and struggles of raising autistic children. The journey may be tough, but fostering open communication and understanding will make a significant difference in your child's experience and development.

One thing Ima do as a lover of Jesus is understand the power he gave us through prayer and one thing ima do as a mama is pray over my babies WITHOUT CEASING. God showed me the power of prayer pretty early on in my walk with Christ but I know everyone’s journey is so different and that’s beautiful.
