Talking to my family

2025/11/18 Edited to

... Read moreIt's funny how something as simple as 'talking to your family' can be both the easiest and sometimes the hardest thing to do! We all know how important it is to stay connected, but life gets busy, right? For me, making time for genuine conversations with my loved ones has become a priority, and it’s truly enriched my life. Just yesterday, we snapped this sweet family selfie – you can see my two girls, one with dark hair and the other with blonde, both rocking their fun red tops, and me in my white top, all of us just beaming. That picture captures a moment of pure joy, but it's built on a foundation of countless conversations, big and small. So, what does 'talking to family' really mean for us? It's not always deep, heart-to-heart discussions (though those are vital too!). Sometimes it's just asking about their day, listening intently to their stories, or sharing a silly anecdote. It’s about creating a safe space where everyone feels heard and valued. Here are a few things I've found helpful in fostering better communication with my family: Dedicated 'Talk Time': This doesn't have to be formal. For us, it's often during dinner, or on our drive to school/activities. We put phones away and just chat. Even 15-20 minutes of uninterrupted conversation makes a huge difference. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Instead of "How was your day?" (which often gets a "fine"), try "What was the most interesting thing that happened today?" or "What made you laugh today?" This encourages more detailed responses. Practice Active Listening: This is a big one! It means truly hearing what they're saying, not just waiting for your turn to speak. Nod, make eye contact, and summarize what you heard to show you understand. Share Your Own Experiences: Don't just interrogate! When you share your struggles, triumphs, or even just your random thoughts, it encourages your family members to open up too. It builds trust and shows vulnerability. Address Conflicts Calmly: No family is perfect, and disagreements happen. When tough topics come up, try to approach them with empathy and a desire to understand, rather than to 'win' an argument. "I feel X when Y happens" is much more effective than "You always do Z!" Celebrate the Small Stuff: Acknowledging achievements, big or small, or simply expressing gratitude for each other's presence, reinforces positive bonds. I've learned that consistent, loving communication is the glue that holds us together. It's how we navigate challenges, share our dreams, and simply enjoy being a family. That feeling of connection, of truly knowing and being known by the people closest to you, is something I wouldn't trade for anything. I hope sharing a bit about how we talk in our family encourages you to find your own ways to deepen those precious conversations!

ITS OK to place boundaries with ur family!!💫
I know there are SO many mixed feelings about this topic. Some people feel like they owe their parents, some feel like they’ll sweep how they feel under the rug to preserve a relationship bc it comes off as “taking them for granted,” some feel guilty for doing so because others don’t have a family.
