... Read moreLiving with Tourette’s syndrome involves a lot more nuance than most people realize, especially when it comes to tic suppression. From my own experience, it’s common to encounter misconceptions about how often people tic or how long they can suppress their tics. Many don’t realize that people with Tourette’s don’t tic constantly. There can be long gaps—sometimes hours—without any tic symptoms showing. It’s natural to wonder how many takes it might take to film a video without visible tics, but for many, those tic-free moments are genuine and not staged. I’ve seen others use devices like emeterm bands to help manage or track their tics, and personally, I’ve noticed marks from wearing one too. Yet, even with such aids, tics can appear minimally or not at all for certain periods. Tic suppression is a real effort where people consciously try to hold back or postpone tics, but it’s not always easy or sustainable over long periods. The pressure and energy it takes to suppress tics can sometimes cause a rebound effect later, with tics coming back more intensely. A short clip of someone not ticcing doesn’t mean the person doesn’t have Tourette’s or that they’re faking it—it’s just part of the complex nature of the condition. Sharing this perspective is important for raising awareness and reducing stigma. Understanding that Tourette’s symptoms vary widely helps build empathy. If you or someone you know has Tourette’s, know that tic suppression is a valid experience but also exhausting. Being patient with yourself and educating others can help create a more supportive environment. In summary, tic suppression can give moments of relief, and short periods without tics are completely normal. My hope is that more people learn about the realities of life with Tourette’s beyond stereotypes, leading to greater understanding and acceptance.
