If you grew up learning that being easy, adaptable, or low-maintenance kept the peace, ignoring your needs probably became automatic.

This shows up as pushing through discomfort, minimizing your feelings, and only noticing yourself when you’re completely depleted. It’s not because you don’t have needs. It’s because you learned early that having them wasn’t safe.

2/3 Edited to

... Read moreReflecting on my own experience, I realize how deeply childhood lessons shape our relationship with self-care. Growing up, I was conditioned to believe that keeping peace meant being easygoing and adaptable, often at the cost of my own needs. This meant I would ignore signs of discomfort or emotional stress until reaching a breaking point. It wasn’t until much later that I understood this behavior wasn’t just a personality trait but a learned survival skill aimed at safety and acceptance. The truth is, when we constantly minimize our feelings or only attend to ourselves when completely depleted, it leads to self-abandonment rather than true low-maintenance living. Real self-care means acknowledging and honoring our needs consistently. For instance, instead of waiting until I was overwhelmed to ask for help, I learned to voice my needs early on, which significantly eased my mental load. Additionally, many of us feel guilty about resting or taking time for ourselves, often convincing ourselves that "it's not that bad," which perpetuates burnout. Gradually, I began practicing small, mindful breaks and recognizing when I needed support instead of pushing through the discomfort blindly. These steps helped me build healthier emotional boundaries and reduce guilt around self-care. By learning to identify and trust our internal signals, we can shift from survival mode to thriving mode. If you find yourself downplaying feelings or neglecting your needs, know that it’s possible to unlearn these patterns. Developing a new skill of self-awareness and compassion towards yourself is empowering and a vital part of healing. Remember, looking after your needs isn’t selfish—it’s essential for lasting well-being.
