Outside training

2025/2/4 Edited to

... Read moreIt’s incredible how quickly a German Shepherd puppy can grow, isn't it? My sweet Freya has absolutely tripled in size since Christmas, and with all that rapid growth comes even more energy and a need for consistent training. Lately, we’ve been making the most of every 'pretty day to get some training in outside.' There’s just something about the fresh air and natural distractions that makes outdoor sessions invaluable for a service dog in training. One of our main focuses has been solidifying her heel work. Training outside, especially in new environments, presents a whole new set of challenges compared to practicing indoors. Suddenly, she's got birds flying by, interesting smells on the ground, and passing people, all vying for her attention. My approach is always to start in a low-distraction outdoor area, like our quiet backyard, and slowly introduce new elements. I keep our sessions short and super positive, using high-value treats and lots of verbal praise whenever she maintains that perfect position by my side. Consistency is key; even a few minutes several times a day can make a huge difference. Managing a growing German Shepherd puppy’s energy during training is another big part of the equation. Freya has boundless enthusiasm, which is fantastic, but it also means I need to ensure she gets plenty of exercise before our structured training. A good play session or a sniffy walk helps her burn off some steam, making her more focused and receptive to learning when it’s time to work. I’ve found that even on a 'pretty day to get some training in outside,' if she's overtired or overstimulated, our progress can actually backslide. It's a delicate balance! For service dogs, public access skills are paramount, and that’s where outdoor training truly shines. We work on maintaining focus amidst real-world chaos, practicing stays, recalls, and of course, heel. One skill I'm particularly proud of her developing is her 'auto-sits on my foot.' This is incredibly useful for when I need her close and attentive, especially in a crowded environment or when I stop to chat with someone. It’s a wonderful way to reinforce her connection to me and maintain a calm demeanor even when there’s a lot going on around us. Every training session, especially those 'training in outside' moments, feels like a significant step forward in our self-trained service dog journey. It’s not always easy, and there are days when she’s more interested in chasing leaves than listening, but the bond we build and the progress we make are incredibly rewarding. Seeing her confidence grow and her skills improve makes every challenge worthwhile. If you're training your own puppy, especially for service work, remember to celebrate every small victory and embrace the journey!

A woman in red workout attire performs a reverse plank using a box. Text explains core training aims to resist motion and stabilize the spine, targets the transverse abdominis, and improves stability, posture, and reduces injury risk.
