Urticaria gang unite #urticaria #coldurtucaria #5k #atx
Participating in my first 5K race while managing cold urticaria taught me so much about preparation and self-care. Because cold urticaria triggers allergic reactions when exposed to cold environments or exercise, I knew I couldn’t take any risks during the run. Packing my bag thoughtfully was crucial to ensure I could enjoy the race safely. I opted for a belt bag to keep my hands free, although I initially hesitated since I'd never used one before. Inside, I packed three loose Benadryl pills—these are my go-to antihistamines to help control sudden allergic symptoms. Knowing the severity of cold urticaria, I also included an EpiPen for emergency use. Thankfully, I have never needed it before, but having it on hand gave me peace of mind. Since the 5K took place at night, I considered leaving a portable fan behind, but I decided to bring it just in case the cool air could help alleviate any reaction symptoms post-run. Alongside the medical essentials, I carried my wallet, some business cards, and everyday items like chapstick and hair ties. These small comforts helped me stay focused and comfortable despite the stress of potential allergic reactions. Before the race, I made sure to take my medication early, so I felt as protected as possible. Although I hoped not to use anything during the run, preparation was key. For anyone with exercise-induced allergies like cold urticaria, I highly recommend consulting your doctor for an emergency plan and ensuring you carry all necessary medications and emergency tools when you participate in physical activities. Establishing this routine not only protects your health but also boosts confidence during your fitness journey.
