⏱️ ✨🧠 ADHD and Time Perception

So, I wanted to share a little about a particular ADHD struggle for me: time perception.

⏰ It's like I have my own little time zone that's completely different from everyone else's. 2 hours feels like 5 minutes; and 5 minutes can feel like 2 hours.

⏰ I can't tell you how many times I've underestimated the amount of time it takes to get ready or accomplish a task. I start doing the *one thing* I intended on, get distracted by a million other things, and before I know it, I'm running around trying to figure out what I was doing to begin with 😩

🏃‍♀️ I thought the only way I was ever to defeat this is to go everywhere unnecessarily early! Do everything as fast 💨 as possible

🥸 However, that’s not a true solution to my time issues!!

🧐 I've learned to adapt my life to these following points; I've found these strategies help me navigate this weird relationship with time.

👉I set reminders and timers so much, I am forced into my routine.

👉I've also become a master of breaking tasks down into smaller, more manageable chunks.

👉So I don't get overwhelmed, I implement my matrix/scaffolding worksheets (find in my earlier posts)

👉To avoid losing track of time, I use my Pomodorro timer and my Apple alarms (on both watch and phone); Google nest is extremely helpful as well (like an Alexa)

***Wearing a watch helps, yes, but in case it bothers me (sensory wise), I have a few clocks around the house, and mini beeping timers***

⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️

ADHD and time perception may be annoying AF, but it's not something I let define me. It's just one of the many quirks that make me who I am. So, if you're someone who struggles with time perception too, know that you're not alone!

... Read moreHey everyone! Building on my earlier post about how ADHD messes with my time perception, I wanted to dive a little deeper into what 'time blindness' really means and share even more tips that have seriously changed my daily life. It's not just about forgetting appointments or rushing; it's a whole different reality where the past and future can feel incredibly fuzzy, making it tough to plan or even recall how long something took. For those of us with ADHD, this isn't a flaw in character, but a genuine neurodevelopmental difference impacting our executive functions, which are crucial for time management. I know I mentioned trying to 'go everywhere unnecessarily early' as a quick fix, and honestly, sometimes it feels like the only way to avoid being late! But for me, true 'overplanning' often meant constantly trying to cram too much into my day or creating schedules that were just impossible to stick to. This led to a cycle of feeling overwhelmed and then giving up. What I've learned is to embrace realistic planning, not just 'more' planning. Instead of over-scheduling, I now focus on building in generous buffer times – like an extra 15-30 minutes for everything, even small tasks. This helps account for the inevitable distractions or misjudgments in how long tasks will actually take. It’s about building a schedule that supports my ADHD brain, not works against it, and allowing for flexibility when the unexpected happens. Beyond my Apple alarms and Google Nest, which are absolute lifesavers, I've found a few other digital buddies that help with my 'ADHD time perception' challenges. Apps like 'Tiimo' or 'Brili' are visual timers that actually show time passing, which is amazing for a brain that struggles with abstract concepts. Seeing the time visually deplete makes it much more concrete. For task management, simple checklist apps like 'Todoist' or 'TickTick' help me break down those big, intimidating tasks into tiny, satisfying steps. And for anyone struggling with time perception like I do, even a physical sand timer for short bursts of focus can be surprisingly effective. I even use a 'time cube' for cooking – small, tangible things make a huge difference in anchoring me to the present moment. Dealing with time perception challenges can be incredibly frustrating, and sometimes, it feels like I’m constantly 'masking' to fit into a neurotypical world. The constant effort to appear punctual or organized can be exhausting, leading to burnout. I used to be so hard on myself for being late or missing deadlines, internalizing it as a personal failing. But finally realizing that this is a symptom of my ADHD, and not a lack of effort or willpower, has been a game-changer. It's okay to adapt and find strategies that work for *me*, even if they seem unconventional to others. Be kind to yourself! It's not about 'curing' ADHD, but about understanding and working with your brain. Remember, if you're struggling with 'ADHD The Perception of Time,' you're definitely not alone. Finding community and sharing these hacks makes such a difference in feeling understood and empowered.

I got diagnosed with ADHD when Covid started and I had to try and work from home. Ended up losing my job because balance everything. So over the past 2 1/2 years I have tried countless techniques to no avail. I’m lost and frustrated. Nothing is worse than disappointing others and yourself continuously.
