Fall semester 25’ 🍂

It's true, the excitement of a new 'Fall Semester 25'' quickly turns into the reality of heavy workloads and looming deadlines. I totally relate to that initial burst of energy followed by the creeping stress! This semester, my biggest hurdle is definitely 'Taking Arabic'. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but diving into the 'Arabic Alphabet' with its initial, medial, and final forms for each letter has been a real brain-teaser. Just trying to distinguish between a 'taa' and a 'thā' or mastering the guttural 'ayn' sound feels like a monumental task sometimes! One of the first things we covered, which was in the OCR, was basic greetings like 'السَّلامُ عَلَيكُم' (assalaamu alaykum) and 'أهلاً' (ahlan). You'd think greetings would be simple, right? But then you start learning about the nuances, like how 'ahlan wa sahlan' is a more formal welcome. And then there are the different dialects – like 'shaami' for Levantine or 'maSri' for Egyptian. It's fascinating, but also adds another layer of complexity when you're just trying to grasp the basics of 'my name is' (ismii) or 'from the city of...' (madiinat). My mind felt like it was doing gymnastics trying to absorb it all, especially when seeing the words written out like 'مدينة' (madiinat). It’s not just memorizing; it’s reprogramming your brain to think in a whole new way. Beyond specific classes, the general 'College Life' challenges in autumn are real. The initial thrill of being back fades, and suddenly you're facing a mountain of readings, assignments, and exams. Time management becomes crucial. I'm finding myself constantly trying to balance study hours, part-time work, and still making time for a social life – it feels like a never-ending juggling act. The shorter, darker days of autumn don't always help with motivation either; sometimes all I want to do is curl up with a hot drink instead of hitting the books. The pressure to perform well, coupled with the constant influx of new information, can feel overwhelming. It's a journey of continuous adaptation. To tackle these 'challenges of being an academic in autumn', I’ve started implementing a few strategies. For Arabic, I'm trying to find a study buddy or join a small group to practice speaking and writing. Having someone to drill those tough 'Arabic Alphabet' letters and practice phrases like 'أنا من مدينة' (ana min madiinat – I am from the city of...) makes a huge difference. I also plan to utilize my professor's office hours more often. For general academic stress, scheduling my days meticulously, including breaks and self-care activities, has been a lifesaver. It’s so easy to burn out if you don’t actively plan for rest. It's a rollercoaster, this 'Fall Semester 25''!
