... Read moreBefore I truly understood insulin, I felt like I was constantly battling my body. I'd diet, exercise, and still struggle with stubborn weight, especially around my midsection. It wasn't until I learned about insulin resistance that things clicked. It's often not just an obesity problem, but an underlying insulin problem that makes weight gain so hard to fight. So, why does insulin cause weight gain, and how do insulin spikes play a role? Well, the main role of insulin is to tell the body what fuel source to use. When you eat carbohydrates, your blood glucose level rises, and your pancreas releases insulin to move that glucose into your cells for energy. If your cells are constantly bathed in high levels of glucose and insulin (often from a diet high in refined carbs), they can become less responsive — this is insulin resistance. When your body becomes resistant, your pancreas has to pump out even more insulin to get the job done. High insulin levels essentially signal your body to stop burning fat and instead, store it, especially as new fat cells. It tells your body to access its own storage of glucose (glycogen) first, and when those are full, to convert excess into fat. This is why controlling our carbs is crucial — high carb intake causes insulin to spike, keeping you in a carb-fueled state rather than a desired fat-fueled state. This is a major reason why many people ask, 'why does insulin resistance cause weight gain?' and 'how do insulin spikes cause weight gain?' It's a vicious cycle where being overweight can also cause insulin resistance, making it even harder to lose weight. I started noticing some clear signs of high insulin in myself: constant cravings, particularly for sweets, feeling tired after meals, brain fog, and yes, that persistent belly fat. For men, these signs can be similar, sometimes even affecting energy and mood more noticeably. The good news? You can absolutely learn how to reverse insulin resistance naturally! One of the biggest game-changers for me was understanding how fasting affects insulin. By increasing the space between our meals and exploring strategies like intermittent fasting, we give our insulin levels a chance to drop and stay low for longer periods. This allows your body to tap into those fat stores for energy, shifting you into that beneficial fat-fueled state. It’s not about starving yourself; it’s about strategic eating windows. Beyond fasting, focusing on whole, unprocessed foods, especially healthy fats and lean proteins, and being mindful of carbohydrate quality, has been key. Regular exercise, managing stress, and getting enough quality sleep are also massive contributors. You might wonder, 'how do I know if insulin resistance is reversing?' For me, the signs insulin resistance is reversing included fewer cravings, more stable energy throughout the day, and a noticeable reduction in that stubborn belly fat. My clothes fit better, and I felt mentally clearer. Even if you've been told you have something like idiopathic postprandial syndrome (that shaky, hungry feeling after eating), addressing insulin dysregulation can make a huge difference in how you feel. It's truly empowering to realize you have control over your body's fuel sources and can work towards a healthier, more energetic you!
