Iron supplements FEED bacteria and parasites

I have a client whose doctor gave her iron supplements for her “anemia”

Fast forward 3 months and her energy levels are crashing, her hair is falling out, and she feels constantly sick

All because her doctor didn’t know the basic science behind iron FEEDING parasites, bacteria, and yeast

Here’s what your doctor doesn’t know and won’t tell you about iron:

... Read moreIron is essential for many bodily functions, primarily for the production of healthy red blood cells. However, it’s important to recognize that iron is also a critical nutrient for many microbes, including bacteria, parasites, and yeast. These pathogens exploit excess iron in the body to multiply and thrive, which can aggravate infections and inflammation. When the immune system senses a threat such as infection or inflammation, it typically restricts iron availability as a defense mechanism, a process known as nutritional immunity. This denies pathogens the iron they need to grow. However, supplementing with iron indiscriminately can override this natural defense, flooding tissues with accessible iron and inadvertently feeding harmful microorganisms. One significant consequence of this is increased production of damaging molecules called hydroxyl radicals, which are formed through chemical reactions involving iron. These radicals contribute to oxidative stress and tissue damage, intensifying symptoms such as extreme fatigue, hair loss, and general malaise often reported by individuals after prolonged iron supplementation when infections coexist. It’s crucial for healthcare providers to assess the underlying cause of anemia carefully before prescribing iron supplements. In cases where anemia is due to chronic infection or inflammation, iron supplements might do more harm than good. For individuals experiencing persistent symptoms after starting iron therapy, monitoring iron status through specialized tests like tissue mineral analysis can provide insights. Consulting a healthcare practitioner knowledgeable about the complex interplay between iron metabolism and infection will help tailor safer and more effective treatment strategies. Ultimately, managing iron levels requires a holistic approach that considers the patient’s overall health, immune status, and the presence of infections. Understanding the science behind how iron feeds bacteria and parasites empowers patients and providers to make informed decisions, avoiding potential pitfalls and promoting better health outcomes.

Why iron supplements can make inflammation worse
Your body hides iron during inflammation and infection as a protective mechanism - but most doctors don’t understand this critical distinction. Supplementing with iron when your body is intentionally hiding it can actually feed infections and worsen chronic inflammation #inflammation #ironsup
