We don't have a car for work but need a place too

I can’t decide which financial move to make: buy a new vehicle or put that money toward a home we need by November. Right now, we’re a one-car household, the car’s in my mom’s name, but my bf and I cover all gas, upkeep, and even insurance. She paid it off, so it’s hers, but that’s where the thing starts.

We can’t update the registration (it’s not ours), so we’ve gotten 3 tickets just during school drop offs in less than a year, I can’t afford more. Plus, with one car, my bf can’t work.

But moving in November is non-negotiable and saving for rent or a down payment is critical (moving’s so expensive). My mom won’t even check how much registering her car costs, she just says it’s too much but the tickets are already costing us! Should I prioritize a second car or keep saving for our new home?

My rule of thumb was always buy a car first then home because I could always live in the car never drive a home. However it’s implied yall have a kid, I would put the home first with that in mind. Or try if possible to get both(hard but not impossible) look at buy here pay here lots and facebook marketplace.
