New Year’s Black-Eyed Peas

This is my favorite way to make black-eyed peas for New Year’s Day dinner! Soak 1 lb dried peas overnight, then cook in a slow cooker with 1-2 smoked ham hocks, a diced onion, 1 bay leaf, 1 tbsp 4-1-1 seasoning, and 6-7 cups water. Cook on high for 6 hours or low for 10-12 hours. Shred the ham, stir it back in, and adjust the seasoning.

4-1-1 Seasoning:

• 4 tbsp kosher salt

• 1 tbsp garlic powder

• 1 tbsp black pepper

Mix & use as an all-purpose blend!

... Read moreBlack-eyed peas have long been a staple in Southern cuisine, especially on New Year's Day, believed to bring prosperity and good luck for the year ahead. This traditional dish is often served alongside cornbread or collard greens to enhance the meal's symbolism of wealth and prosperity. To prepare black-eyed peas, soaking them overnight helps to soften them, making them easier to cook. Using a slow cooker allows for a gradual infusion of flavors, especially with the addition of smoked ham hocks, which impart a rich, savory taste. The 4-1-1 seasoning blend created in your recipe brings a perfect balance of saltiness and flavor, enhancing the overall dish further. Incorporating vegetables like diced onions and the fragrant bay leaf elevates the taste profile, making this dish not only a tradition but a culinary delight. As you enjoy your New Year’s meal, consider sharing your family traditions or variations of this recipe! Many families customize their black-eyed peas with additional spices or other ingredients, creating memorable dishes each year. Whether served simply or as part of a larger feast, black-eyed peas remain a cherished dish in many households, signifying hope and abundance.
