Over the years, hidden or stretched-retracted door handles have been seen as a symbol of the cutting-edge new era of automobiles, especially in premium cars and newer electric trains; the image of the missing handle with the body has been presented as both an aerodynamic innovation and a pretty clean design, becoming a trend that many camp manufacturers have flocked to.

But behind that luxury, quite a few drivers have never liked it, and many engineers question whether performance outcomes are worth the risk, both in practical and safety terms; most recently, regulators in China are about to shut down this trend by issuing a new standard banning the use of fully hidden handles.

According to CarNewsChina media reports, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) began revising safety standards as early as May, drafting new regulations requiring full-hide handles to be prohibited. Semi-hide or traditional sections are also valid, but a functional reserve mechanism system is required of course in emergencies.

If this draft is approved, it will have an adjustment period of one year and will actually be enforced from July 2027 onwards. New cars sold in China will no longer be able to install full hidden handles.

The reason for this measure is clearer when looking at the actual figures. The aerodynamic side of the hidden handle reduces the resistance by only 0.005-0.01 Cd, or saves up to 0.6 kWh per 100 kilometers, but adds an average weight of about 8 kilograms, three times the cost of the mechanical handle, and eight times the damage rate. Some camps agree that handle repair cases account for 12% of all repair work.

The key is safety issues. A 2024 test of the China Insurance Automotive Safety Index found that electronic handles opened successfully by only 67% in side collisions, while mechanical handles reached 98%. The accident investigation system reported a 47% increase in cases involving broken handles in a single year, and more than 80% in hidden handles, while the consumer association found a 132% increase in finger clamps, including broken bone injuries.

Not all camps followed this trend; Volkswagen used a semi-hidden model, Audi installed an emergency pull rope, and the GWM president came out to call the feature "heavy, unsafe and almost useless in aerodynamics."

The new measures also reflect a larger trend in the auto industry that is beginning to question "tricks" that may be beautiful but unsafe, such as hiding key buttons in touchscreens, panoramic glass roofs, or electronic side mirrors. While in Europe, Euro NCAP has announced that it will not give full ratings to cars that hide key functions in the control screen from 2026 onwards. 🤩🤩
