Why it feels like everything is “too much” now

2/7 Edited to

... Read moreIn today's fast-paced world, many of us experience that feeling of everything being "too much." From my own experience, it's often not just one source of stress but the stacking of multiple pressures that leads to overwhelm. Factors like constant exposure to noise, relentless sensory inputs, chemical pollutants in our environment, and spending excessive time indoors can strain our bodies beyond their natural capacity to cope. What makes this situation more challenging is that these stressors accumulate faster than our biology can recover. Our bodies were not designed for continuous bombardment by such an intense combination of stimuli, leading to what experts describe as sensory overload. This state can manifest as feelings of exhaustion, mental fog, irritability, and even loneliness, as the brain struggles to keep up. From personal practice, I've found that conscious efforts to build a biological buffer help in managing these effects. This includes dedicating time daily for quiet and nature exposure, which supports sensory reset. Limiting screen time and reducing exposure to artificial lighting can also soothe the nervous system. Additionally, incorporating mindfulness techniques like meditation can strengthen our resilience against these ongoing pressures. Understanding that it's the combination and accumulation of these stressors—not just any single one—is key. It's empowering to recognize the need for recovery and to proactively seek activities that help your body and mind repair. By cultivating these practices, you can better navigate modern life's complexities and reduce the feeling that everything is "too much."
