How to find your inner child again
I think as we grow up, we start to realize that life loses a little bit of its ✨magic✨. Days get repetitive, we think we’ve learned all we need to, we don’t yearn for more as much as we used to.
The last few years I’ve really been working hard to rediscover my inner child. I miss those days when I was like a sponge, so excited to soak up the new and undiscovered. Here’s what I’ve learned so far:
1. 🎨 Create art, just for the fun of it. It doesn’t have to be good! It just has to bring you joy. A few days ago, I spent 2 hours just mixing paint, without even putting it down on a paper or a canvas, just because that’s what felt good to me. Just create, with no end goal in mind.
2. 🌍🌱🐝 Spend more time outside! Remember when you were little, and you would spend every minute you could outdoors, rain or shine? Remember making potions, or pretending to be a pirate, or hunting for bugs that you could take home as pets? Get outside, and just be. Hunt for bugs again, make a flower crown, climb a tree!
3. 📚📖 Read, read, READ! Did you know reading can actually help boost your creativity? Not a fan of long novels? Go to your library and find a picture book that you used to adore. Then build a comfy reading nook out of pillows, blankets, and couch cushions, and get lost in another world. It might be tricky to stay focused your first couple of tries, but the more you do it, the more you’ll start to enjoy it (don’t forget, I’m speaking from experience here).
4. ❓❔🤨 Never stop asking questions! Us adults think we know everything. News flash: we really, truly don’t. I think we’re taught at a young age that it’s bad to have questions, that it means you’re stupid, which couldn’t be farther from the truth. If you’re not sure where to start, just begin by asking “why?”. Why do we do things this way? Why does this work like it does? You can ask people around you, or even google it if you’re alone!
5. 😰👻 Say “yes” to the unknown, even if it’s scary! I’m still working on this one, because I’ve always been cautious, even as a kid. But we used to say yes to the unknown so much more often when we were little, even if it was just because we didn’t have any other choice. We were constantly flooded with new experiences, which does A TON to help your brain development. So try doing it again! Visit a store you’ve never been before, or a park! Try a food that you think you won’t like, or have just never thought of trying before. Get yourself out of your monotonous routine, even if it’s just for a moment.
