Grab buys Taiwanese Foodpanda for $600 million, starting a new step outside South Asia

Grab, Southeast Asia's largest ride and delivery services business, announced on March 23 that it had agreed to buy the Foodpanda business in Taiwan for 600 million US dollars.
Doing so, as Grab, is the first step in economic expansion outside the Southeast Asian region
According to the Singapore-based Grab Group, this acquisition is part of a project adopted to improve revenue through artificial intelligence (AI), new services and overseas business procurement.
Chief executive Anthony Tan says their experiences in Southeast Asia are consistent with the Taiwan market.
Taiwan Foodpanda had a total commodity value (GMV) of about 1.8 billion US dollars by 2025
Grab expects to complete the transfer in the second half of this year, with core revenues expected to grow by about 60 million US dollars by 2028.
In addition, Grab aims to achieve annual revenue growth of more than 20 per cent over the next 3 years and to make a profit of 1.5 billion by 2028, according to Reuters.
Alex Hungate, Chairman of Grab, said they had already started some businesses outside the region, including the acquisition of the US-based Stash business.
Grab Group has confirmed its adjusted EBITDA (profit before tax and interest deduction) forecast for 2026 to be between US $700 million and $720 million.
Transferring acquired Foodpanda Taiwan users and drivers onto the Grab platform will be completed in early 2027
On the vendor side, Delivery Hero Chief Executive Niklas Oestberg said the sale was an important step in the company's strategic review and the resulting money would be used to repay debt.
Although Delivery Hero's share prices have fallen by almost a third this year, the Delivery Hero company's share price has rebounded by nearly 11 per cent on the news that the Taiwanese business has now been able to sell.
However, investor Aspex Management has pointed out critically that just selling a single Taiwanese business is still not enough and should do more to gain confidence in management.
