Humility is thinking of yourself less..

3/7 Edited to

... Read moreIt's so easy to misunderstand humility, isn't it? For a long time, I thought being humble meant always putting myself last or even denying my own strengths and talents. But I've come to realize that's not what true humility is about, especially when looking at it from a Christian perspective. It's a journey, not a destination, and it has profoundly changed how I view myself and others. The real definition of humility, as I've experienced and learned through faith, is about recognizing one's worth as God sees it. It’s not about thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself, well, *accurately*, through the transformative lens of divine love and grace. This means understanding that all our gifts, talents, and abilities come from God, and our intrinsic value isn't based on what we achieve, how much we have, or how others perceive us, but on the profound truth that we are His cherished creation. This realization is incredibly freeing, taking the pressure off trying to be perfect or constantly prove ourselves. This journey has taught me the delicate balance between awareness of sin with God's love. We acknowledge our imperfections, our mistakes, and our constant need for grace; we don't pretend to be flawless. However, we don't dwell in debilitating self-condemnation or shame. Instead, we embrace the incredible, unconditional love God has for us—a love so vast it covers all our shortcomings. This divine love empowers us to grow, to seek forgiveness, and to continuously strive for a better reflection of His image. It’s a beautiful paradox: admitting our brokenness while simultaneously affirming our beloved status as children of God. It’s a constant recalibration of our self-perception. One of the biggest challenges I've faced in this pursuit is avoiding both pride and self-degradation. Pride, that subtle whisper, tells us we're better than others, that we've earned everything through our own efforts, or that we don't need God. Self-degradation, on the other hand, makes us feel utterly worthless, undeserving of love or good things, and leads to a lack of self-respect. True humility helps us navigate wisely between these two dangerous extremes. It’s about having a realistic, grounded view of ourselves – neither inflated by ego nor deflated by false modesty. It means celebrating our strengths and successes with genuine gratitude to God, and acknowledging our weaknesses and failures with grace and a teachable spirit, always remembering our complete dependence on Him. Practically speaking, cultivating humility in daily life looks like a myriad of small, intentional actions. It means being quick to listen and slow to speak, truly hearing others' perspectives before offering our own. It involves serving others anonymously, not for recognition, but out of genuine care. It’s about being open to learning from everyone, regardless of their background or status, recognizing that wisdom can come from unexpected places. Humility also shows up in being quick to forgive and slow to anger, in giving credit where credit is due (especially to God), and in genuinely celebrating the successes of others as if they were our own. It means being teachable, admitting when you're wrong, and having the courage to ask for help when needed. Ultimately, embracing humility frees us from the exhausting burden of constantly proving ourselves, allowing us to live authentically, joyfully, and purposefully in God's loving presence. It transforms our relationships, deepens our faith, and brings a profound peace that the world often misses.
